Get Pregnant Naturally with Blocked Fallopian Tubes

Can You Get Pregnant Naturally with Blocked Fallopian Tubes

True or False.  You can get pregnant naturally with blocked fallopian tubes.  At first glance, it seems impossible to get pregnant if your eggs can’t reach the uterus through your tubes.  However, conceiving naturally may still be an option.

So CAN you get pregnant naturally with blocked fallopian tubes?  For some women, getting pregnant naturally IS possible because the REASON of the blockage may be treatable.  Blockages due to inflammation, mucus obstruction, abnormal growths, and scar tissue can be reduced with non-invasive, natural therapies.

Causes of blocked fallopian tubes

To understand how you can get pregnant naturally even with a diagnosis of blocked fallopian tubes, knowing some of the common causes is helpful.

They include:

  • Infection from bacteria causing pelvic inflammatory disease, gonorrhea, and chlamydia can cause scarring. Screening for infections should be the first step when diagnosed with blocked fallopian tubes so proper antibiotic treatment can be prescribed.
  • Endometriosis occurs when the tissue that is normally found in the uterus migrates and grows in other locations. This extra tissue growth and the scarring that may result from the surgery to remove it can block the fallopian tubes.
  • Fibroids can block or twist the tubes. Because fibroids often result from a condition of excessive exposure to estrogen, nutritional and lifestyle changes may have positive impact on these growths.
  • Mucus can block the tube. This is one of the most easily treatable causes of blocked fallopian tubes as it often arises from food intolerances.  Identifying the offending foods may reduce mucus production, clearing the path of the egg to the uterus.
  • Past ectopic pregnancy can cause scarring.
  • Previous abdominal surgery including ceasearean sections can create scar tissue.
  • Emotionally stuck. Just as heartache can manifest physically in a heart that literally feels heavy or that it has been stabbed, emotional imbalances can manifest physically in the fallopian tubes.  Feeling stuck or trapped can contribute to blocked fallopian tubes.

If the blockage is caused by scar tissue such as from infection, past ectopic pregnancy or surgeries, reducing the scar tissue  is possible but it will depend on how severe the scarring is.

However, if the blockage is due to inflammation from endometriosis, foods causing mucus buildup, or emotional disharmonies, fallopian tubes may open more quickly to allow for a natural pregnancy.

Unfortunately, the cause is often difficult to determine.  It may not just be one cause either, further complicating the situation.

Regardless of the potential cause, if you want to try to conceive naturally, many natural methods may help to reduce the blockage enough for an egg to pass through.

What You Can Do at Home to Open Blocked Fallopian Tubes

Nutritional Changes to Clear Fallopian Tubes

Avoid dairy.  Dairy products are the single largest source of dietary estrogen for humans.  Researchers estimate that 60-70% of our food-sourced estrogen comes from milk, yogurt, ice cream, cheese, and other dairy products.  Excess estrogen can worsen fibroids and endometriosis.  In addition, dairy can increase mucus production in the fallopian tubes, causing blockages.

Dairy is often consumed for its calcium and protein content.  Rather, opt for dark, leafy green vegetables as superior sources of bioavailable calcium.  Other protein sources such as grass-fed meat, pasture-raised eggs, and fatty fish are much more nutrient-dense without having the harmful side effects of dairy products.

Avoid sugar and gluten.  These are highly inflammatory foods that should be avoided regardless of the cause of blocked fallopian tubes.  If your immune system is constantly irritated from these foods, your reproductive system will not have the resources to heal itself.  More specifically, endometriosis and fibroids are aggravated with these foods.

Sugar substitutes that don’t affect blood sugar levels should be used preferentially as needed when trying to get pregnant.  These alternatives include stevia, monkfruit extract, erythritol, and xylitol.  However, it’s important to decrease your dependence on eating sweets so use sweeteners minimally to retrain your taste buds.

Although using sweeteners like honey and maple syrup seem appealing because they’re all-natural and minimally processed, they raise blood sugar levels which can cause a cascade of effects including raising the stress hormone (cortisol), imbalancing hormonal regulation to disrupt ovulation, and damaging DNA in your eggs.

Increase anti-inflammatory foods.  Foods like avocados and fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring) support your body’s ability to fight inflammation.

Ginger-Turmeric Matcha Green Tea Latte
Matcha Green Tea Latte for Fertility
A daily cup of matcha green tea with ginger and turmeric is a 3-in-one power punch of anti-inflammatory herbs.  Adding collagen powder and coconut oil provide extra nutrients essential when trying to get pregnant.

Matcha green tea has up to 10 times the nutritional value of regular green tea and up to 137 times the amount antioxidants, making it a more nutritious choice.  Because 1 teaspoon of matcha green tea contains about 70mg of caffeine in  (about half the amount found in 1 cup of coffee), limit to one cup a day.

  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 tsp organic high quality matcha green tea
  • ½ tsp grated fresh turmeric or ¼ tsp ground dried turmeric
  • ½ tsp grated fresh ginger or ¼ tsp ground dried ginger
  • 1 scoop of collagen powder from grass-fed cows
  • 1 tablespoon organic coconut oil

Blend all ingredients in a blender.  Pour into a cup.  Enjoy!

Curcumin, the compound giving turmeric its bright yellow color, has been studied extensively for its anti-inflammatory benefits and is one of the most effective natural anti-inflammatory remedies.  However, it can be difficult to reach therapeutic levels just eating turmeric spice.

In addition, curcumin is poorly absorbed by the body.  However, consuming black pepper with turmeric, which contains piperine,  a natural substance can enhance the absorption of curcumin by 2,000%1.

Choose a curcumin supplement with Bioperine (the trademarked name for piperine) for optimal benefit.  Research indicates that turmeric doses of 500–2,000 mg per day may be effective.

Hand Reflexology  to Unclog Blocked Fallopian Tubes

Originating in China, reflexology has been used for thousands of years.   As many as tens of thousands of nerve endings are found in each hand.  Because of the high density of nerve endings in these areas, reflexology is a powerful technique that stimulates the nervous system to trigger a healing response using only pressure.

Open Blocked Fallopian Tubes with Hand Reflexology

To stimulate the fallopian tubes using hand reflex points located in the wrist crease, wrap your right wrist crease with your left thumb and left middle finger.  Twist your right hand 8 times to create friction.  Repeat on the left hand. Do this several times a day – the more the better.

Clearing Emotional Blockages to Open Fallopian Tubes

Although rarely addressed in a clinical setting, a woman’s emotional health and well-being is critical to her physical health as it can have a very real impact on her fertility.  Think of how anxiety or fear can create physical discomfort like a lump in the throat or a knot in the abdomen.  In the same way, stuck energy can manifest in blocked tubes that prevent the egg from moving forward, flowing freely.

Identifying areas where you feel stuck or trapped can be critical to allow the body to heal physically.  You can’t move forward emotionally if you are trapped in your past or stuck in unhappy relationships or situations.  Take the time to identify these uncomfortable and often painful realizations that your present situation is not how you imagined yourself to be.  Commit to small steps you can take to move yourself forward to a better you.

Clearing Blocked Fallopian Tubes with Practitioners

Manual therapy to clear blocked fallopian tubes

As an alternative to surgery, uterine massage is a non-invasive, drug-free, natural therapy to reduce scar tissue.

A ten year retrospective study2 using a manual physical therapy technique called The Clear Passage Approach (CPA) included 235 women diagnosed with at least 1 blocked fallopian tube.  Results showed a 61% success rate of at least 1 tube clearing with CPA.  57% of those patients who experienced clearing of at least 1 tube were able to get pregnant.

Another massage technique to reduce scar tissue called Mayan Abdominal Therapy has gained popularity.

HSG with oil proves effective for unblocking fallopian tubes

A 2017 studyknown as the H2Oil study compared the benefits of flushing the fallopian tubes with either an oil-based or water-based solution in 1,119 women.

The procedure, known as hysterosalpingography (HSG), is a dye test commonly given to women who have been unsuccessful in getting pregnant to see if the fallopian tubes are open.  Most HSGs are done with a water-soluble contrast medium (WSCM).  This study shows the benefits of having it done with an oil-based solution instead.

The women were randomised to a standard HSG with a water-soluble contrast medium (WSCM) versus an HSG with Lipiodol® Ultra-Fluid (a poppyseed oil). In the standard HSG group, the ongoing pregnancy rate 6 months after this HSG was done one time was 29%, as compared to 40% in the Lipiodol® Ultra-Fluid HSG group, which was clearly statistically significant.

It is not understood why using oil achieves improved pregnancy rates as compared to the standard water-based solution.

The procedure appears to be safe, is minimally-invasive and well tolerated by women.  It can be considered as an alternative to more expensive and invasive fertility treatments.

The use of Lipiodol® itself is not commonly practiced so couples need to speak with their doctor about it

Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine to Clear Blocked Fallopian Tubes

Chinese Medicine has been used for thousands of years for the treatment of infertility.  Classic chinese herbal formulas developed centuries ago are still in use today to open blocked fallopian tubes.

In one study4 of 200 women, a comprehensive therapy of acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine outperformed drugs for the treatment of infertility due to fallopian tube obstructions.  The drug group of 100 women received injections of antibiotics, corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, and an enzyme to break down proteins.  The group of 100 women who received acupuncture combined with herbal medicine group achieved an 85% pregnancy rate as compared to the medication group which had  a 38% pregnancy rate.

When should I get my fallopian tubes tested?

In the vast majority of women with blocked fallopian tubes, no symptoms are experienced.  Typically, women only discover the problem when they have difficulty getting pregnant.  If you are over 35 years old and have a regular menstrual cycle, schedule an appointment with a doctor after six months of regular, unprotected sex.  If you are under 35 years, see your doctor if you have been unsuccessful after one year months of regular, unprotected sex.  Checking your fallopian tubes should be part of any fertility evaluation.

I’m using IVF because of my blocked tubes.  Is there any reason to try to unblock my tubes naturally?

Absolutely!  At worse, natural methods of clearing fallopian tubes will do nothing.  At best, you might actually get pregnant naturally before your IVF cycle starts as has happened to my clients, saving you thousands of dollars.  If nothing else, these natural methods, especially the nutritional recommendations, may also increase the success of your IVF.

Should I see a reproductive endocrinologist or a natural fertility specialist?

Both.  Working with both paradigms of Western medicine and natural medicine will give you the most options to achieve the quickest, most natural and cost-effective approach.  If you are doing IVF, optimize your chances of success by improving your fertility naturally.
