How Black Sesame Seed Improves Fertility
May 27, 2020
The million dollar question for my clients is how to improve egg quality.
One important way is to increase antioxidant intake.
Antioxidants are needed to police for free radicals (unstable molecules) that can damage your eggs’ DNA. Our bodies generate free radicals as a natural waste product. However, we’re introduced to a lot of them from our environment and the foods we eat so as we age, our bodies accumulate more than can be eliminated.
A job of antioxidants is to reform those free radicals so they don’t go back out into society (i.e. your body) to cause more damage, like a cop.
That’s what CoQ10 does as an antioxidant.
But you’re reading this for something new.
Another source of potent antioxidants can be very useful to improve egg quality that you probably have never heard of as a Westerner. That’s because it’s a Chinese herb used in Asian foods.
What is it?

Black Sesame Seed
Black sesame seed is very popular in Asian culture. Available in shops and restaurants, they’re in cakes, porridge, and candy.
As a Chinese medicinal herb, it’s known to strengthen the liver and kidney (organs important for detoxification) and enriching the blood.
It’s often used to treat age-related issues such as graying hair, hair loss, blurred vision, low back ache, painful or tight and stiff joints, weakness in the joints, and constipation
And, let’s not forget, fertility issues!
Below is an easy recipe for you to try and see if you like the taste of black sesame seeds.
You can get it in Asian grocery stores or online.
Recommended dosage is 10g-30g a day (about 1 tablespoon – 1/4 cup).
Black Sesame Latte
Blend the following ingredients:
- 2 tbsp black sesame powder
- 1 cup non-dairy milk such as coconut milk, almond milk, oat milk (avoid soy milk though due to high phytoestrogen content)
- sweetener to taste (use stevia, monkfruit, xylitol, or erythritol since they don’t affect your blood sugar level)
- 1 scoop grass-fed collagen powder (optional)
Enjoy hot or cold!
