11 Unexpected Tips to Keep Your Womanly Parts Healthy

When trying to conceive, you’ve probably already changed some of your habits to give yourself the best possible chance of success.

You might be eating more fresh, whole,nutrient-dense foods instead of processed products to reduce chemical additives.  Choosing personal care products with more natural ingredients may be investments you now make which you didn’t previously.

But something you may not have thought of is to pay special attention to your sensitive, private areas.  Toxins introduced to these regions can disrupt the natural environment designed to protect the vagina, uterus, and ovaries.

Below are some simple tips to maintain an optimal baby-making environment.

  1. Use pads, instead of tampons whenever possible.  You don’t want to “plug up” your blood flow as it can cause blood stagnation.  Think about how standing water becomes smelly and dirty because it doesn’t move or flow.  Your “flow” is supposed to, well, flow.  Stagnant water can be dangerous for drinking because it can become a breeding ground for bacteria and parasites.  Similarly, in Chinese Medicine, stagnant blood can often be a cause of  fertility issues.
  2. If you must use a tampon, change often.
  3. Menstrual cups are made of medical-grade silicone, rubber, or plastic.  Of the three materials, rubber is best.  Silicone is not as reactive as plastic but it’s not completely inert either.  Like tampons, use menstrual cups only when needed for extra protection or when you have a hot date.  Clean often.  Otherwise, stick with pads.
  4. Attitude adjustment regarding pads:  If you think pads are cumbersome and inconvenient, thank your body instead for having a period because it’s telling you that you can get pregnant.  If you can look at it from that perspective, you’ll be more accepting of using pads.
  5. Buy organic, unbleached feminine products whenever possible.  The skin around the vaginal opening (called the labia) are sensitive so be careful about what you expose to it.  Your skin absorbs chemicals that sits on it.  That’s why we spend a small fortune on moisturizers and anti-aging skin products, hoping they’ll get into our skin and plump them up.
  6. For the same reason above, wash your undies using natural detergents with as few chemicals as possible.
  7. Buy underwear that use natural fibers such as 100% cotton or silk.   Common synthetic fabrics include polyester, rayon, modal, spandex and nylon.  These materials require chemical processing to form the fabric.  Although natural, bamboo is heavily processed with chemicals to smooth out the rough material so should be avoided.
  8. Speaking of undies, reserve the practical, non-sexy ones for your periods.  Invest in feminine lingerie to cover the seat of your feminine power.  Your most precious gift will come from that region so treat it like a queen, not a jester clothed in ragged undies full of holes.
  9. Don’t douche.  It changes your vaginal pH.  Your vagina is meant to be acidic to prevent infections.  When you get close to ovulation, your cervical mucus becomes less acidic to allow sperm to make their long journey to the mother ship (aka your egg), kinda like deactivating the force field around a space ship so aliens can board the ship.  🙂 If you want to feel fresher, wash with water and mild soap.  Use a squirt bottle for ease.
  10. Speaking of…quit the fancy soaps loaded with toxic chemicals.  Switch to a natural brand with ingredients you can understand and say out loud five times quickly.  If the ingredients are a tongue twister, they’re probably synthetic chemicals that you’re better off not using.
  11. If you need to use lubricant, use one that’s labeled as sperm friendly.  Otherwise, it will probably kill off the sensitive buggers.
